Francis Hemsley resided at 25, Camden Street, Derby, at the time of his enlistment, and ‘was brought up to the butchering trade’. He was employed by Messrs. Nelson Ltd., of Sadler Gate, for nine years, ‘part of which time he was manager at their Pear Tree branch, and then held a similar position with Messrs. John English and Co. at their Sadler Gate shop for three years, giving up this position to join the forces.’
He was secretary of one of the Wednesday half-holiday cricket clubs, and was married with one child.
